District of Columbia license plate laws you should know

Below are the four laws that most often trip up District of Columbia drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.

Two plates required

DC requires two plates — front and rear — on every passenger vehicle under DC Code § 50-1501.04. Failure to display either plate can result in fines.

Front plate rule

No exemption exists for vehicles lacking a front mounting bracket. Owners must install a bracket or face a citation under § 50-1501.04.

Registration stickers & display

DC issues a registration sticker affixed to the upper-right corner of the rear plate showing the month and year of expiration. Plates are valid for 2 years.

Inspection / smog check

DC requires biennial OBD-II emissions testing for all registered gasoline vehicles 2 model years old or newer at the DC Inspection Station. Safety inspection is also required biennially. Combined inspection typically costs around $35.

Types of District of Columbia license plates

District of Columbia issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.

Standard DC / Taxation Without Representation

Default plate with the 'Taxation Without Representation' slogan (added in 2000 as a protest of DC's lack of Congressional voting representation). Two plates required.

Personalized / Vanity

Up to 7 characters on the standard or specialty backgrounds. $100 initial + $25/year through DC DMV.

Disabled / Disabled Veteran

ISA wheelchair symbol; qualifies for accessible parking district-wide. DV plates carry waived fees for qualifying veterans.
